As the discourse about Israel on university campuses continues to degenerate, there is growing concern that some of Israel’s most vocal detractors are crossing a red line between acceptable criticism of Israel and legitimizing anti-Semitism. The recent endorsements by several internationally prominent academics—including John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Richard Falk of Princeton—of an overtly anti-Semitic book written by a notorious Jew-hater illustrate this dangerous trend.
The book in question is entitled The Wandering Who? and was written by Gilad Atzmon, a British jazz musician. Lest there be any doubt about Atzmon’s anti-Semitic credentials, listen to his self-description in the book itself. He boasts about “drawing many of my insights from a man who … was an anti-Semite as well as a radical misogynist” and a hater of “almost everything that fails to be Aryan masculinity” (89-90). He declares himself a “proud, self-hating Jew” (54), writes with “contempt” of “the Jew in me” (94), and describes himself as “a strong opponent of … Jewish-ness” (186). His writings, both online and in his new book, brim with classic anti-Semitic motifs that are borrowed from Nazi publications:
Throughout his writings, Atzmon argues that Jews seek to control the world:
· “[W]e must begin to take the accusation that the Jewish people are trying to control the world very seriously.”
· “American Jewry makes any debate on whether the ‘Protocols of the elder of Zion’ [sic] are an authentic document or rather a forgery irrelevant. American Jews do try to control the world, by proxy.”
Atzmon expands on this theme in The Wandering Who?, repeatedly conflating “the Jews” and “the Zionist”:
· He calls the recent credit crunch “the Zio-punch” (22) and says it was not “a Jewish conspiracy” because “it was all in the open” (30).
· Paul Wolfowitz, Rahm Emmanuel, and other members of “the Jewish elite” remain abroad instead of moving to “Zion” because they “have proved far more effective for the Zionist cause by staying where they are” (19).
· The American media “failed to warn the American people of the enemy within” because of money (27).
Atzmon has written that Jews are evil and a menace to humanity:
· “With Fagin and Shylock in mind Israeli barbarism and organ trafficking seem to be just other events in an endless hellish continuum.”
· “The Homo Zionicus quickly became a mass murderer, detached from any recognised form of ethical thinking and engaged in a colossal crime against humanity.”
Atzmon rehearses many of these ideas in The Wandering Who?:
· “[T]o be a Jew is a deep commitment that goes far beyond any legal or moral order” (20) and this commitment “pulls more and more Jews into an obscure, dangerous and unethical fellowship” (21).
· If Iran and Israel fight a nuclear war that kills tens of millions of people, “some may be bold enough to argue that ‘Hitler might have been right after all’” (179).
Atzmon regularly urges his readers to doubt the Holocaust and to reject Jewish history:
· “It took me years to accept that the Holocaust narrative, in its current form, doesn’t make any historical sense. … If, for instance, the Nazis wanted the Jews out of their Reich (Judenrein—free of Jews), or even dead, as the Zionist narrative insists, how come they marched hundreds of thousands of them back into the Reich at the end of the war?”
· “[E]ven if we accept the Holocaust as the new Anglo-American liberal-democratic religion, we must allow people to be atheists.”
Atzmon reprises some of this language in The Wandering Who?:
· Children should be allowed to question, as he did, “how the teacher could know that these accusations of Jews making Matza out of young Goyim’s blood were indeed empty or groundless” (185).
· “The Holocaust religion is probably as old as the Jews themselves” (153).
· The history of Jewish persecution is a myth, and if there was any persecution the Jews brought it on themselves (175, 182).
Atzmon argues that Jews are corrupt and responsible for “why” they are “hated”:
· “[I]n order to promote Zionist interests, Israel must generate significant anti-Jewish sentiment. Cruelty against Palestinian civilians is a favourite Israeli means of achieving this aim.”
· “Jews may have managed to drop their God, but they have maintained goy-hating and racist ideologies at the heart of their newly emerging secular political identity. This explains why some Talmudic goy-hating elements have been transformed within the Zionist discourse into genocidal practices.”
Atzmon returns to this theme repeatedly in The Wandering Who?:
· The “Judaic God” described in Deuteronomy 6:10-12 “is an evil deity, who leads his people to plunder, robbery and theft” (120). Atzmon explains that “Israel and Zionism … have instituted the plunder promised by the Hebrew God in the Judaic holy scriptures” (121).
· The moral of the Book of Esther is that Jews “had better infiltrate the corridors of power” if they wish to survive (158).
Finally, Atzmon repeatedly declares that Israel is worse than the Nazis and has actually “apologized” to the Nazis for having earlier compared them to Israel:
· “Many of us including me tend to equate Israel to Nazi Germany. Rather often I myself join others and argue that Israelis are the Nazis of our time. I want to take this opportunity to amend my statement. Israelis are not the Nazis of our time and the Nazis were not the Israelis of their time. Israel, is in fact far worse than Nazi Germany and the above equation is simply meaningless and misleading.”
In light of this Der Stürmer-like bigotry against Jews, it should come as no surprise that even some of the most hard-core anti-Israel activists have shunned Atzmon out of fear that his anti-Semitism will discredit their cause. Tony Greenstein, a self-styled “anti-Zionist” who recently participated in the Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s unprecedented disruption of an Israel Philharmonic Orchestra concert in London (which Greenstein compared to protesting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1930s), denounced The Wandering Who? as “a poisonous anti-Semitic tome.” Sue Blackwell, who co-wrote the Association of University Teachers’ motion to boycott Israeli universities in 2005, removed all links to Atzmon from her website and placed Atzmon on her list of “nasties” along with David Irving and Israel Shamir. Socialist Worker, a website that frequently refers to Israeli “apartheid” and publishes articles with titles such as “Israel’s murderous violence,” removed an interview with Atzmon and called the evidence of Atzmon’s anti-Semitism “damning.” At least ten authors associated with the Leftist publisher that published The Wandering Who? have called on the publisher to distance itself from Atzmon’s views, explaining that the “thrust of Atzmon’s work is to normalise and legitimise anti-Semitism.”
Hard-core neo-Nazis, racists, anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers, on the other hand, have happily counted Atzmon as one of their own. David Duke, America’s premier white supremacist, has posted more than a dozen of Atzmon’s articles on his website over the past five years and recently praised Atzmon for “writ[ing] such fine articles exposing the evil of Zionism and Jewish supremacism.” Kevin MacDonald, a professor at Cal State Long Beach whose colleagues formally disassociated themselves from his “anti-Semitic and white ethnocentric views,” called Atzmon’s book “an invaluable account by someone who clearly understands the main symptoms of Jewish pathology.” Israel Shamir, a Holocaust denier (“We must deny the concept of Holocaust without doubt and hesitation”) who argues that Jews ritually murdered Christian children for their blood and that “The rule of the Elders of Zion is already upon us,” refers to Atzmon as a “good friend” and calls Atzmon one of “the shining stars of the battle” against “the Jewish alliance.”
But neither Atzmon’s well-established reputation for anti-Semitism nor the copious anti-Semitic filth that fills The Wandering Who? has deterred Professors John Mearsheimer and Richard Falk from actively endorsing Atzmon’s work. Mearsheimer, the Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, calls The Wandering Who? a “fascinating” book that “should be read widely by Jews and non-Jews alike.” Falk, Milibank Professor of International Law Emeritus at Princeton University and United Nations Special Rapporteur on “human rights in the Palestinian territories,” calls The Wandering Who? an “absorbing and moving” book that everyone who “care[s] about real peace” should “not only read, but reflect upon and discuss widely.” Falk’s endorsement appears prominently on the cover of Atzmon’s book. Mearsheimer’s endorsement is featured on its first page. These professors are not merely defending Atzmon’s right to publish such a book; they are endorsing its content and urging their colleagues, students, and others to read and “reflect upon” the views expressed by Atzmon. One wonders which portions of this bigoted screed Professors Mearsheimer and Falk believe their students and others “should” read and “discuss widely.”
Mearsheimer has defended his endorsement (on Stephen Walt’s blog) by questioning whether his critics have even read Atzmon’s book. Well, I’ve read every word of it, as well as many of Atzmon’s blogs. No one who has read this material could escape the conclusion—which Atzmon freely admits—that many of his “insights” are borrowed directly from classic anti-Semitic writings. Mearsheimer claims, however, that he has endorsed only Atzmon’s book and not his other writings. But the book itself is filled with crass neo-Nazi rants against the “Jew,” “World Jewry,” and “Jewish bankers.” He claims that “robbery and hatred is imbued in Jewish modern political ideology on both the left and the right” (123). And like other anti-Semites, Atzmon is obsessed in the book with Jewish names. It was Jews, such as Wolfowitz and Libby, who pushed the United States into war against Iraq in the “interests” of “their beloved Jewish state” (26). “How is it that America failed to restrain its Wolfowitzes?” Atzmon asks (27).
Likewise, according to Atzmon’s book, it was “Jewish bankers,” financiers, economists, writers, and politicians such as Greenspan, Levy, Aaronovitch, Saban, Friedman, Schiff, and Rothschild who have caused the economic and political problems of the world, ranging from the Bolshevik revolution to the wars of the 20th century to the current economic troubles (27,194). And like other classic anti-Semites, Atzmon doesn’t simply fault the individual Jews he names; he concocts a worldwide Jewish conspiracy motivated by a “ruthless Zio-driven” (27) “Jewish ideology” (69) that finds its source in “the lethal spirit” (122) of the Hebrew Bible. This sort of conspiratorial drivel is borrowed almost word for word from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion—the Czarist forgery that became a staple of Nazi propaganda.
A number of other prominent academics have defended Atzmon and his endorsers. Brian Leiter, the Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago Law School, dismissed the reaction to the book and to Mearsheimer’s “straightforward” endorsement as “hysterical” and not “advanc[ing] honest intellectual discourse,” though he acknowledges not having read Atzmon’s book. On the basis of having perused one brief interview with Atzmon, Leiter is nonetheless prepared to defend him against charges that he is an anti-Semite or a Holocaust denier: “His positions [do not mark him] as an anti-Semite [but rather as] cosmopolitan. … He does not deny the Holocaust or the gas chambers… .” Leiter should read the book, especially pages 175-176, before leaping to Atzmon’s defense. There Atzmon reflects “that 65 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, we must be entitled to start asking questions. We should ask for historical evidence and arguments rather than follow a religious narrative that is sustained by political pressure and laws.”
James Petras, Bartle Professor of Sociology Emeritus at Binghamton University, called The Wandering Who? “a series of brilliant illuminations” and praised Atzmon’s “courage.” The list of academics who have endorsed Atzmon also includes William A. Cook, a professor of English at the University of La Verne in southern California; Makram Khoury-Machool, a lecturer at the University of Cambridge; and Oren Ben-Dor of the University of Southampton School of Law.
These endorsements represent a dangerous step toward legitimizing anti-Semitic rhetoric on university campuses. If respected professors endorse the views contained in Atzmon’s book as “brilliant,” “fascinating,” “absorbing,” and “moving,” these views—which include Jewish domination of the world, doubting the Holocaust, blaming “the Jews” for being so hated, and attributing the current economic troubles to a “Zio-punch”—risk becoming acceptable among their students. These endorsements of Atzmon’s book are the best evidence yet that academic discourse is beginning to cross a red line, and that the crossing of this line must be exposed, rebutted, and rejected in the marketplace of ideas and in the academy. (Another evidence of this academic trend in Europe appeared recently on Atzmon’s website, where he brags that he has been invited to “give a talk on ethics at the Trondheim University” in Norway. This is the same university whose faculty refused to invite me to speak about the Arab-Israel conflict.)
Accordingly, I hereby challenge Professors Mearsheimer and Falk to a public debate about why they have endorsed and said such positive things about so hateful and anti-Semitic a book by so bigoted and dishonest a writer.
Alan Dershowitz is a professor at Harvard Law School.

...Why are John Mearsheimer and Richard Falk Endorsing a Blatantly Anti-Semitic Book... Good question indeed and good in relation to the other various acedemics Dershowitz names, who are not out and out nuts and whack jobs. I take his word for the characterization of this book. So why, indeed, why? Is it as simple and straighforward as straight up Jew hatred?

This is indeed appalling. I've been reading about Atzmon on Harry's Place for some time now; as a Brit of course he's much better known over there and Britain, in my opinion, has been a far softer target for antisemites than the US and much more pro-Arab (coincidence?) However now that M/W and Falk have endorsed the book, will the poison spread to the US? I'd argue that it already has. It's taken awhile but ignoramuses on both right and left have become increasingly biased in recent years, plus young people are impressionable and lack historical knowledge. Also when Kos has the right wing realists M/W as guests at his convention something is rotten in Denmark. Unfortunately both the British left and the American left have failed to stand up for their own principles when it comes to racism against Jews and a double standard against Israel - oh forget "double standard." Comparing Israel to Nazis is simply wrong and it should be condemned as the tripe that it is with no apologies. PS include "W" with "M" because "W" gives "M" a platform to defend the indefensible. C'mon man. Why not dig up Henry Ford and let him rave on while you're at it?

Alan Dershowitz- You're Not Welcome Here Gilad Atzmon Salem-News.com Sooner than you think, Dershowitz won’t be welcome anywhere. Alan Dershowitz (LONDON) - In a recent article, notorious Zionist Alan Dershowitz reveals the scale of rejection he faced on his recent visit to Norway: Ahead of his visit to the country, Dershowitz’ lectures were offered (without any charge) at the three leading Norwegian universities. These universities, who on earlier occasions had been happy to host Harvard Scholar Stephen Walt and Israeli historian Ilan Pappe, clearly said ‘no’ to Dershowitz. The Dean of the Law Faculty at Bergen University told Dershowitz that he would be honoured to have him present a lecture on the O.J. Simpson case -- as long as he was willing to promise not to mention Israel. I guess that the message was clear -- while the Dean of the Law Faculty thought that his students may benefit from learning about the legal advocacy of a ‘single murder suspect’ -- he probably could not see any academic justification in educating them about the possible defense of a ‘murderous collective’ i.e. the Jewish State. An administrator at the Trondheim school said that Israel was too ‘controversial.’ That is surely the most polite way possible to refer to a racist expansionist terrorist state -- The University of Oslo simply said "no" without offering any excuse. But then the shekel dropped: “It was then”, writes Dershowitz, “that I realized why all this happened. At all of the Norwegian universities, there have been efforts to enact academic and cultural boycotts of Jewish Israeli academics.” Did I miss something here? Dershowitz is not exactly even an Israeli -- he is, actually, an American Jew – so why should he regard himself as a ‘victim’ of the academic and cultural boycotts of ‘Jewish Israeli academics’? I guess though, that Dershowitz grasps the inevitable truth here: the boycott against Israel is ethically driven -- It obviously identifies Dershowitz and other Jewish lobbyists as an extension of the Israeli crime, and vice versa. Seemingly, humanity and humanists are making an intensive effort to purify our cultural landscape of any traces of Zionist ideology and Zionist advocates: It is not just Israeli academics that we oppose -- it is actually people who are affiliated with any form of Jewish supremacist ideology. Dershowitz can be assured that Jews and even Israelis are more than welcome in Norway -- as long as they do not represent the Jewish State and its policies. As you may have expected though, Dershowitz could not leave the scene without trying to dig up some ‘dirt’ – he found out that Trond Andresen (an assistant professor at Trondheim who was amongst the leaders of the cultural Boycott of Israeli academics) had, on an earlier occasion, written that ‘there is something immensely self-satisfied and self-centered at the tribal mentality that is so prevalent among Jews.’ Apparently, Adresen's words were taken out of context (as he himself explains here.) Yet the most obvious fact here is that there surely is something ‘immensely self-satisfied’, ‘self-centered’ and tribally obsessed about Dershowitz himself: and since Dershowitz insists on representing Jewish interests on every possible platform (that would be lame enough to allow him to do so), Dershowitz should also be aware of the bad impression he gives of the Jewish people as a collective. “This line of talk—directed at Jews, not Israel—is apparently acceptable among many in Norway's elite,” complains Dershowitz. One should remind the dull Zionist American lawyer that Israel does actually specifically define itself as the ‘Jewish State’, and therefore if Dershowitz wants others to differentiate between “Israel’ and the ‘Jews’ -- he might also be kind enough to advise us where the demarcation line between the two begins and ends: where for instance does ‘Israel’ end and the ‘Jews’ start? Or more precisely, where exactly does ‘Israel’ end, and where does ‘Dershowitz’ start? The world we are living in is becoming increasingly aware of the destructive power of Zionism. It is also becoming more and more aware of the role of the Jewish lobbies, and of their powers within the media. The world we are living in is becoming allergic to Dershowitz, and for a damn good reason. ‘Jews you're not welcome here’ was Dershowitz’s interpretation of his rejection in Norway. He was obviously wrong. The clear, direct and unmistakable message was, ‘Dershowitz you're not welcome here.’ But it goes further -- sooner than you think, Dershowitz won’t be welcome anywhere.

Back in March, notorious Zionist advocate Alan Dershowitz launched an attack on Norwegian universities that refused to provide him with a platform. Instead of learning the necessary lesson and amend his tactics, Dershowitz indulged himself in a personal assault against academics who opposed his visit to the country. To read more about the affair click here. Just a few days after the publication of Dershowitz’s rant, I was approached by some Norwegian academics and here is the outcome: Today at midday I will give a talk on ethics at the Trondheim University. In the evening I will discuss Jewish Identity Politics with the local Palestinian solidarity group. Tomorrow I will teach music at the University and in the evening I will give a concert together with the Orient House Ensemble. Thank you, Mr. Dershowitz!

MSA70: It is quite simple what the Palestinian National Movement's complaint is about Israel: Jews are supposed to be permanently subservient to whatever population they live among. From the time Islam arose, Jews were subservient to the Christians in Christendom and subservient to the Muslims in Muslim lands. Everywhere, Jews were subservient because Allah willed that wherever they go, they should be like clay in a potter's hands under their masters' jurisdiction. The Zionist arrogantly rebelled against the lot which Allah decreed for them, which they could have escaped simply by accepting the true supreme faith, by asserting self-determination for themselves, in Dar-al-Islam no less. You do nothing less than defend those who seek to restore the old social order between Jews and Muslims in the Middle East.

I still find it excruciating that such person is able to find a publisher, sell to readers, and somehow avoid being made a pariah. Jamie: What in the world is wrong with you, exactly? Have someone check your meds. Incidentally, you keep insisting I am a paid Iranian blogger. I imagine this is an insult where you're from, but a little advice, the insult doesn't translate well. I think he's mildly delusional. I called him out on his bigotry a couple times (he's posted some wildly anti-muslim/arab things from time to time... though in fairness, nothing near the hateful spite directed at Jews and exemplified by the above cited book) and now he never misses an opportunity to lash out. I would direct him to any number of posts in which I've voiced continued support of Israel, waxed philosophical on how as a Chrstian I see the Jews as being the natural forebears of the faith I hold dear and express sadness and regret at the vitriol continuing to be aimed at those of Jewish persuasion... but why bother? Some people are just angry.

Noga1read the wall street journal comments in articles about Israel specially a character by name of James Richard. Read Jules in tablet magazine. All these individuals use incitement and personal attacks to distract fair and honest discussion. MAS70 is one of them . There have been a string of others specially in the wall street journal. I met them in Worldfocus the defunct PBS program, their procedure was always the same, the words were always the same. They are aplenty in the huffington post. Al Jazeera does not allow these bloggers in their English edition. But I understand that in their Arabic language site they are aplenty attacking Israel attacking the Jews with enthusiasm and delight. of course there are the self hatred Jews like the new York times columnists and owners Ochs Schulbergers owners Thomas Friedman and Roger Cohen columnists. Of course Nicholas Kristoff the NYTColumnist spilled a poisonous anti Israel recently. Kristoff happens to be very ignorant about the subjects he writes. But the Ochs Schulbergers needed more ammunition. And in Haaretz you have Gideon Levy, and Avram Burg. Wow these characters will dance the macabre dance with the Mershheimer crowd at the tune of anti Israel anti Jews.

I see possible points of comparison, especially the part of the novel that is a novel of manners. Anyway, different as they may be, I'm thinking about them and as I say am looking for some criticism treating them together.

p.s, Also while I think about it, Gwen, at least so far, seems to bear comparision to some of Austen's women, if only as rich a point of daparture in considering the differences. I'm not taking a course or anything, only giving the matter some thought. I just finished The Brothers Karamazov, what a struggle, amazingly worthwhile, but a struggle nonetheless, and reading Eliot now is helped a lot by her not being, or writing like, Dostoyevsky.

This isn't the right forum to talk about Jane Austen or G. Eliot, Basman. I'll post a reply on the Literature and Politics thread.

obreindavi. If unveiling the Muslim love for violence and war and killings hurt your ears and your penance for denial too bad. Barack Hussein Obama is mighty proud of his Muslim ancestors. He said it loud and clear in his Cairo speech. Now that he is running for re-election he has dropped his Hussein middle name. Barack Hussein Obama has chastised the Israeli prime minister. Barack Hussein Obama has garnished candy to his Muslim relatives like Saudi Arabia, Syria, Abbas the Palestinian, the Iranians. He told Abbas please reduce the hatred against Israel against the Jews in your liberated territories. Abbas never stopped doing it. but Barack Hussein Obama was vociferous about Israeli construction in the liberated territories. Thus obreindavi, thus Tristan, if telling the truth hurts you that is your problem. When Iran has provided thousands of missile, rockets, arms to Hezbollah Lebanon, Hamas Gaza, Assad Syria, and this is never mentioned by obreindavi and Tristan and others. I guess Bassman is an exception. Just show me a Muslim country that is working hard to make peace, renounce violence, dedicate themselves to make their people to better life in commerce, industry, education, research, freedom. And soon we will see war between Iran Hezbollah Hamas Syria against Egypt Turkey Saudi Arabia. As the saying goes it is in their nature. Hatred violence is the hallmark of Islam. And yes Barack Hussein Obama is mighty proud of his Muslim ancestry. Have you been outraged at Syria killing unarmed civilians at the tune of over 3500+? What kind of hypocrites are you. obreindavi and Tristan. obreindavi is the junction of Obrein and David , what ? Irish and Jew? What. Well to imitate you just put obreindavi and Tristan in the same room. What will be the conversation. Hum. So this Irishman was in Belfast one Saturday night. Stops a guy and asks him are you British or Irish, they guy afraid answers I am Moslem. So the Irishman says I am the luckiest Jew tonight in Belfast and beats the obreindavi Tristan brains(?) out of the poor guy. So this Israeli tells this Palestinian , we Israelis are productive and you Palestinians are so lazy. We chop a few trees and in no time we build ourselves a boat. You Palestinians are so lazy. The Palestinian answers you lend me your sister and I will make your boat full of little sailors. And the little sailors will be half Jewish half Muslim, they will hate themselves and don't know why. The truth and honesty is totally absent from obreindavi and Tristan.

obreindavi why do you read my blog? I know it is educational for you. But your brain works in the wrong direction. For your enjoyment Barack Hussein Obama is mighty proud mighty proud of his Muslim ancestry and middle name. But not at re-election time. You dig ? Muslims are killing each other. Bigotry bigotry bigotry. But it is the truth. Bigotry bigotry bigotry. How in the world Will Rogers said I never met a man I did not like. Well he never met obreindavi, he never met Tristan. PS and the Syrians, as good Muslims as they are, continue killing their own unarmed civilians. And don't bring up Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan. Show me a Muslim country that is peace loving and I will stop being your conscience, do you hear obreindavi ? Do you hear Tristan?

What with MSA70 (hey, I took that class once!) and our all-caps friend JAMIE CHURCH invading the discussion boards, it makes the thought of sitting in a bar between two TV sets blaring different sports channels sound like a real civilized pasttime.

We have two out of order posters kicking up a lot of dust and noise, each on his own, unrelated to the other, in what could have been a pretty constructive and agreeable discussion. It's not uncivilized. It's two kids insisting on disrupting a perfectly amiable circle time in kindergarten by throwing each a mighty unignorable tantrum and preventing the other kinder from gaining some useful knowledge.

Basman, if you're still around, I think Eliot's best work is Middlemarch, and it convinces me that she was the superior writer. The scope and depth of her books--on topics like religion and faith, scientific inquiry, love--are incredible. But that's just me.

entering this thread after the first forty-eight hours explains why I am watching Animal Planet's "cutest dogs" - watching an orangutan walking his dog (ok - it IS cute) puts most of this insane world into perspective...Kate the Great Dane and Pip the Deer are playing Hide and Seek. Sophia: I was waiting for the Henry Ford reference - the man who made the Protocols respectable for Hitler (and why I still can not consider buying a Ford today). fwiw, I heard about a really interesting historical novel on NPR today. I rarely listen to NPR anymore, and kept expecting the conversation with Alice Hoffman to somehow turn into a politically-correct query if there really was archaeological evidence that Jews had really, I mean REALLY?, lived in Jerusalem in AD 70. But, it was about how the author, Alice Hoffman had used archaeological evidence from Jerusalem and Masada to construct her four fictional Jewish women in "The Dovekeepers". This review captures what I heard "The Dovekeepers", four women who were at Masada: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/reviews/the-dovekeepers-by-alice-hoffman-2367606.html

"Why are John Mearsheimer and Richard Falk Endorsing a Blatantly Anti-Semitic Book?" A very stupid question from Alan Dershowitz I admire. Isn't it obvious by now that both John Mearsheimer and Richard Falk are certifiable anti- Semites? They associate with anti- Semites, write anti- Semitic garbage. It follows that they are anti- Semites. Expecting something different from those two is like expecting something different from anti- Semite Obama. In the same way we know Obama is certifiable anti- Semite because he too associated with known anti- Semites: Wright and Farrakhan who made a special effort to visit anther well known anti- Semite, Khadafi in Libya. 2012! Soon I will have the great pleasure of voting against Obama. Anyone chosen to run against Obama is my candidate.

I haven't read Middlemarch since I was an undergrad and I'm now 1/2 way through Daniel Deronda, and while I could live with a little less intellectual commentary from the garrulous narrator, I'm finding it great. No spoilers please: i.e. be the better man, if you know what I mean.

Israel is unpopular on the left because it is a squalid dictatorship where the standard of living is about 1/10 that of Europe. In Israel women have no rights and are treated as property. Homosexuals are subject to the death penalty. Religious minorities are not tolerated in Israel, which is why most of them have fled. The number of papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals approaches zero. By contrast the Arab countries surrounding Israel are prosperous democracies with a a high living standard. Women are treated as the equals of men. The attitude toward homosexuals is live and let live. A lot of the software we use in our daily lives was written in the Arab countries. The Arab countries have produced large numbers of Nobel Prize winners in science and medicine. That's why progressives around the world side with the Arabs. In case you were wondering.

Excellent bulbman1066. You left out the killings of unarmed civilians that protest at their absolute rulers. And the hatred towards your neighbor and calls for violence from their clerics and secular leaders. Then using their precarious resources to plant thousands of missiles among their villages. And indulge in terrorism all over the world. Well these facts is what naive mentally senile bloggers call bigotry and racism. Going to the main subject that Professor Dershowitz points in his always articulate way. Is the infestation of anti Jewish professors in the USA academia. These is most dangerous because young minds will be infected with the evil of antisemitism. With less fortune the American Jewish Committee ran a recent study evaluating if anti Israel propaganda by these veritable professors was really antisemitism. Well they decided not. Thus they were wrong. And where is Barack Hussein Obama in all of these. Sure enough hiding his middle name because he is running for re-election. But I should not be too hard on him. He has killed Osama Bin Laden. He has killed the American born al Qaeda leader in Yemen. He has been using drones most effectively to kill out enemies in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He is bringing the troops back from the liberation war in Iraq. After all Barack Hussein Obama is partially a good Muslim descendant. He is the top leader that has more than another expelled large numbers of illegals. You should give credit where credit is due. So why attack the messenger with personal epithets? Because they have no arguments to challenge. They do it all the time against Martin Peretz. And they do it against yours truly. Well they fail miserably. The truth makes them uncomfortable and are like wild dogs barking in the middle of the night. Kid you not. Compliments will lead you nowhere. Too late for compliments. Tristan get the meds. ....for yourself. Kudos for Barack Hussein Obama. Grrrrrrrrrr.

obriendavi, ironyroad ,liberalref and above all Tristan are highly complimentary on yours truly. Too late compliments will lead you nowhere. But they do not use arguments they just attack personally. Either they are brainless senile, or plainly lazy. What irritates them is my use of Barack Hussein Obama. But kiddos he is mightly proud of his middle name. He said so in his infamous Cairo speech. And when he kissed the feet of the Saudi prince. And when he got out of his way insulting the Prime Minister of Israel. Or when he told the president of the Palestinian Authority, don't worry we will take care of these rascal building in the liberated territories, and p l e a s e stop attacking Israel in your daily speeches in the liberated territories. do not go to the UN and declare a state. Sadly Barack Hussein Obama has been ignored by his Muslim half brothers. Do not bother me I am running for re-election. Barack Hussein Obama is a smart cookie. Gush the Republican opposition is so meek that he is going to make it. A sigh of relief. Once re-elected he will go back to his middle name with belated pride without prejudice. Unemployment will be as high as ever for the next four years.
