If You Can't Make It on Idol...

Who needs Simon Cowell when your daddy wins himself a Senate seat and becomes the hot new hope of the GOP?

This press alert just in from CBS: Ayla Brown, former American Idol contestant and daughter of Massachusetts political phenom Scott Brown, will demonstrate her vocal stylings "exclusively" on The Early Show next Tuesday.

How cute is that?

Yet another reason we don't hear the words "family values" much from Republicans anymore.

The kind of GOP family value many of us applaud played out in a San Francisco courtroom this week. Jerry Sanders, San Diego's GOP mayor, recalled on the stand his conversion in 2007 from an opponent to a supporter of marriage for homosexuals. His testimony was apparently quite personal and emotional; his daughter Lisa, a lesbian, was in the courtroom with her newlywed wife. His epiphany: "I was discriminating against even my own daughter." Sanders took no small amount of political flack from the local GOP. From all appearances his change of heart came directly from the heart. He loves his daughter very much. I find a photo of the two of them hugging outside the courtroom to be very moving. It occurred to me that, while health care is stalled and progress on cap-and-trade and tighter financial industry regulation is anyone's guess at this point, the extension of equal rights to gays seems to be grinding inexorably forward. Perhaps that's because it is a family value, after all.
