Per Andrew Sullivan. She's actually... really good. Extraordinarily good, by the standards of a local news sportscaster. She knows what she's talking about, has some good lines, and has a distinct homey style that really works for the format. It's a huge shame she never made it, and not just because by going into politics there's some chance she'll one day become president and wreak untold damage to the United States and the world.

The president has to make more complex decisions in a single day than most people do in a lifetime. This job requires gravitas. Yet, Sarah Palin quit her gig as governor because she wasn't having fun. Now, she has found her niche as a sports commentator on a local channel. However, the notion that anyone in the Republican Party considers her a serious candidate in 2012-not just a good side show-is kidding themselves. Few make it to become nominees of their party. And only one person wins the presidency. President Obama is playing catch-up because of the multiple crises George W. Bush left in his wake-a mountain of both foreign and domestic trouble. Now we need the Congress to start playing team across the aisle. I hope that the Democrats in Congress come to their senses and start working with the president. In addition, I hope the GOP become less like the mob and once again Members of Congress dissent constructively to help the case of all Americans. At present, a small group uses their dangerous rhetoric to feed an extremist segment of our society as well as inflaming international terrorists that bring death to the US. As Bush reminded us frequently, respect the office and the person with the job. As for the GOP, its long past time to end your internecine battles and start thinking about America's well-being across the world. We didn't make many friend in eight long years, and our adversaries got stronger also. Domestic problems of many kinds are also keeping the president moving constantly just to keep up, Bottom line- Our country has serious problems. And only serious people can solve them. Perhaps the increasingly dangerous state of the world will concern serious people in America with we will start seeing Washington do their jobs after doing too little for far too long.

I've often said that sportscaster was the perfect career ambition for Sarah Palin, and, you know, that's nice work if you can get it, and hardly a put-down. It's that whole governing/politics thing that seems like a bridge too far to nowhere.
