Go Home PETA Jumps The Shark

JONATHAN CHAIT JANUARY 19, 2010

PETA Jumps The Shark

PETA attracted a lot of attention for its "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" ad campaign. The genius was that they had some connection between their idea and nudity. But the excuses for nudity seem to be getting increasingly lame:

In case you're wondering, I have a perfectly good excuse for exploiting: I'm discussing a public policy issue! But PETA's hinging its case on the link between nudity and urging people to neuter pets, and it seems particularly tenuous here.

I don't know. It might work. I think I'll go out and neuter a stray cat or two on the off chance that this will be my reward. '

I'm confused. Too much sex is a bad thing.... Ask Sasha Grey? Doesn't she represent the opposite point of view? Although, I'm sure I'm reading too much into it. The obvious message of the ad is, "Look at this hot naked chick! Peta, and so forth."

I have seven cats, all of whom I have had spayed/neutered; they are among the twenty or so I have cared for over the years, all of whom I have had spayed/neutered or paid a shelter to do after the fact. I've also volunteered for a feral cat trap/neuter/return group for the past few years through which I have been instrumental in the spaying/neutering of, oh, another thirty or so kitties. In other words, who could be more deserving of his just reward than williamyard, who has never turned his back on a deserving little pussy? The proper degree of redemption must always be judged in context. Given that Allah purportedly rewards those who fly planes into buildings, surely the least PETA could do is send me Sasha Grey.

Yard makes sense of the ad with the second half of his second paragraph, which should have been the tagline.

But, surely, with its republication here The New Republic demonstrates that the ad worked. Free advertising and all.

Ha! I knew yardy was a crazy cat lady all along. In any case, I think the Onion already addressed this well a couple of months ago.

Too much sex is never a bad thing. Never. No such thing. It just can't happen. Only a crazy person would say such a thing. Now people that talk too much is a bad thing. Escpecially preachy preening about fake moralism like Peta.
