The Boston Review has an essay on life in an Indian madrassa that is worth checking out. The author's purpose in writing the piece was to show the outside world what these religious schools are really like, and why they are, according to him, often misunderstood. And yet it's hard to read the essay and not come away thinking that the author's education was proroundly disturbing. Anyway, you can read it here.
