Go Home Clinton's Speech

THE PLANK JANUARY 8, 2008

Clinton's Speech

She is delivering it more smoothly than I have seen her deliver a speech in a long, long time. There is more emotion in her voice and she seems very sincere. She is also not-so-subtly referencing her teary moment from yesterday. Slightly grating, to be sure, but probably just as effective as yesterday's big moment turned out to be.

P.S. Even in defeat, Obama's speech was spectacular.

The crying thing is a one-shot deal, like Al Gore's Big Smooch at the Dem convention in 2000.  She can't do it again, but it was a cute trick this once when she was on the ropes.

I beg to differ. I have been plenty thrilled--fired up and ready to go--by Obama's speeches, and I actually saw him in Iowa where he lit up a middle school gym. The man's great gifts are undeniable. But to my ears, he was just going through the motions tonight. He can only riff on the same stirring phrases so many times before they start to sound repetitive and tired, perhaps somewhat shtick--like. Defeat enervated him tonight; and the going through the motions quality of his speech seemed fairly evident, (at least to me).
