THE PLANK APRIL 9, 2007

Fact Checking

In the "60 Minutes" interview with Senator John McCain, Scott Pelley asked him about his age. After an uncomfortable exchange, Pelley added reassuringly, "There has been no return of the skin cancer that he battled seven years ago, but it left him with long scars which he covers with a joke."

In 2002, five years ago, news networks reported that McCain had suffered another reoccurence of the potentially fatal skin cancer. On February 4, 2002, CNN reported, "Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, underwent surgery Monday to remove a lesion from his nose 'consistent' with an early form of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, the senator's office announced."
