Go Home Up With People Endorses Hillary

THE PLANK FEBRUARY 13, 2008

Up With People Endorses Hillary

I took a lot of shit in TalkBack for saying I thought this Hillary video was funny. So I just wanted to assure our readers that I recognize the unspeakable awfulness of this:

P.S. True story: A friend of mine, when he was a kid, once had to share his house with some Up With People members that his mom had agreed to host when they passed through his town for a show. He said they weren't all that chipper and wholesome off-stage.

I couldn't last a minute...how did it end?

I expect this is really a satire by Obama-ites. They rented out a room, put up a stolen Hillary sign and lured people in with coffee, donuts (and presumably lots of alcohol), encouraging them to make fools of themselves. I mean it can't be real. Can't be.

On a side note, I couldn't make it through Obama's Yes We Can but I watched all the glorious 2 1/2 minutes of "Hillary 4 U and Me". Just as the spectrum of left to right is supposedly a circle and you end up in the same place when you go too far, perhaps the same can be said of the spectrum from great to jaw-droppingly horrible. Or maybe my brain is still recovering and I should take a little break from Talkback.

Wow.  This is unbelievable.  I too couldn't make it to the end.  I can only hope it was an shiv in the back from one of the internet people she fired yesterday.

I don't think this is a spoof at all. I think this is the same group that played my Bar Mitzvah--but they were much tighter back then. Looks like they're in Act III of the "Behind the Music" arc.

A drug-dealing HS classmate of mine joined Up With People. He was for Ron Paul before Paul was cool-- like 25 years ago

Not to be believed.  Yes We Can was pretty silly although I guess it appeals to the young (I'm 69)... but this is just a very bad satire... she does seem to mimic everything he does or others do for him.  Does that mean he wins regardless?

You didn't deserve to take shit for liking the last video, Jason.

But you do deserve to take at least a little shit for posting this god-awful clip. ;-)

Is it wrong to want to have sex with one of the performers?

I just saw her for a second or two--medium build, straight dirty-blonde hair.

[taps fingertips together like Mr. Burns in "The Simpsons"]

Yes. Lure her down to The Room in my basement.

Yes.

[taps finger absently on desk]

Make her sing this song, just for me. Except substitute "williamyard" for "Hillary."

The Room is soundproof, of course.

Sing, little one, sing for Master!

I was going to post something about hoping not to see old vids of John Davidson or Toni Tenille and The Young Americans, but after Mr Y's post, maybe some wholesome fare wouldn't be so bad.

Not at all.  I would certainly poll her.

This is an old video (August 2007?), but I don't think anyone has brought it up yet... or maybe they did, and just repressed the memory.

It's pretty bad:

This parody of the "Yes, We Can" video is even funnier, and without the cringe element.

Funny thing, upon seeing the "yes we can" video I went all analytical; for some reason I went into research mode instead of responding to it as a political appeal like a normal person (who needs normal, anyway).  But this one...I am utterly defeated by it.

Why does this video remind me the episode of the Brady Bunch when the family went on tv, singing?

I wanted to join Up With People when I was 14.

I grew up in a very abusive household.

I've had therapy since. Phew.

epackard,

We gotta keep on, keep on, keep on dancin'

Keep on, keep on, keep on dancin'

Dancin' all through the night.

I can still remember the crazy Brady Bunch costumes and dance moves.  thank you for reminding me.

I think it is an accomplishment to create timeless kitsch. Utterly unaware with a smile. It is born of an archetype and is expressed by masters such as Ed Wood. It has given us everything from go-go dancers to, well....this. What a way to start the day.
