THE PLANK AUGUST 30, 2007
I don't get the whole jogging thing, but this new ad from the Romney campaign is noteworthy for another reason: it focuses on his business career and his success with the Olympics.
Romney's a natural "competence candidate," but up until now he's chosen to run as a rightwing crusader--which hasn't always been the best fit. Is this ad a sign that Romney's changing strategy?
If he is, I think it's a smart move. This ad was almost certainly cut before the Larry Craig scandal, but I think the sexual shenanigans plaguing the GOP might prove to be a major boon to Romney. To be the true conservative candidate, maybe he doesn't have to fulminate about abortion and gay marriage and immigration. Maybe all he needs to do is show that he's a family guy who's only been married once and is on speaking terms with his five kids. If his family life provides him with the necessary conservative bona fides, then Romney could spend more time talking about his management skills--which, unlike his newly social conservative views, appear to be quite genuine.
