Emigdo, shhh! Marty might not let you keep writing here if you say nice things about Hillary.

But it's SOOOOOOO much more fun (as well as traditional) for the US to simply declare its support for a military coup that displaces a leftist Latin American leader. Where's the moral clarity in what we're doing now in Honduras?

Left unexplained is why it's any of the our business who is president of Honduras. Did the Honduran government intervene in our hijacked 2000 election? Maybe they should have.

great post emigdio (look at boneill showing off that he knows your TNR moniker). and by the way, Marty was asking where was Hillary before while Obama was just doing his G8 photo op, looks like we have an answer.

Thanks, you two. The Arias plan is still wobbly, no doubt about it. But the contrast between the general level of diplomatic competence this administration has shown, compares to the previous one, is staggering.
If Bush was in office, by this point in the crisis we'd have photos of Micheletti in the Rose Garden.

Exactly how wobbly? Some press reports now say Micheletti has denied making the overtures the NYT reported.

Furious backtracking following a failed trial balloon? Hard to tell.
I know the NYT journo who wrote this morning's story, though. She's a real pro and it's - erm - impossible for me to imagine she just made something like that up. Something very odd is going on here.

Contra dbuck, I'm going to say that left unexplained is how the success of "back-channel diplomacy through Congressional aides rather than the State Department" represents a feather in Hillary's cap. I'm always ready to give the lady credit, but I must confess my puzzlement here.

Austinexpat,
Contras? Another US attempt to meddle another countries affairs. (Just kidding. I realize you were speaking Latin.)
Honduras, by the way announced today that it was cutting off all foreign aid to the United States until we pass a health care reform bill, prosecute the Gitmo torturers, expand the clunker program, and reinstate Sarah Palin as governor of Alaska.
That's enough kidding for a Saturday.
