This week, former Detroit Piston and seven-time All Star David Bing won the run-off election to be the city's mayor after Kwame Kilpatrick resigned in disgrace. The Democratic mayor-elect joins a long tradition of athletes becoming politicians, from Olympian Ralph Metcalfe to Jesse "The Body" Ventura.

Dear amanda,
Is it possible to add to your list? I'm speaking of alexis arguello, who hung up his gloves and is now the mayor of managua, nicaragua. The nicaraguan super champion (one of his nicknames during the late 1970's) deserves to be recognized as well.
Regarding a photo, i'd suggest the one taken the moment he dropped ray mancini with a sparkling 5 punch combination via his 14th round TKO win.

And in the predictions department, look for current pro baller, Shane Battier, himself a Michigan native, to make the move into politics after his NBA career winds down.

In further predictions, john calipari will become governor of kentucky anytime he wants it. Unless, of course, he falls on his face at UK, in which case he'll be tarred, feathered, and rode out of town on a rail.
