Go Home The 99 percent and the 67 million

THE STUMP OCTOBER 11, 2011

The 99 percent and the 67 million

If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear it? And if Rick Perry stages a resurgence at the Dartmouth debate, will anybody see it? Missing from much of the hype over the Hoedown in Hanover is that it will almost certainly be seen by fewer people than the last few debates. It is airing on Bloomberg TV, which is in only 67 million homes in the U.S. Bloomberg TV rival CNBC, by contrast, is in 100 million homes.

A Bloomberg spokeswoman notes that Bloomberg TV is also in more than 200 million homes outside the U.S., but beyond a smattering of expats around the globe, I'm not sure how that helps matters, since last I checked the British and Germans weren't voting in the GOP primaries. Oh, and the debate is also airing on American Forces Network (AFN) which is available to about 1 million U.S. military personnel located in over 175 countries and 140 ships at sea. So at least they can enjoy what promises to be another probing discussion of our policy in Afghanistan.

For those without Bloomberg TV (whose regular viewership is as elite as you'd expect - it's the only cable network with viewers earning more than $150,000 on average), the debate will be live-streamed at Bloomberg.com and washingtonpost.com (the Post is the other debate co-sponsor.) Even better, you will be able to follow my live-tweeting of the debate @TNR, starting at 8 p.m.

Feh. $150,000 average viewer income and they don't even have an HDTV feed (at least on my service).

but beyond a smattering of expats around the globe Hey, I get Bloomberg on Sky in Mexico so who are you calling a smattering, there are 1 million American citizens living in Mexico alone (at least part of the year), all of us eligible to vote (not saying all get bloomberg however or that, well, the kid expats can vote, but you get the idea). There are far more expats than most people realize.

um, Tim, this debate is solely about the economy/jobs, a seated roundtable of seven, Romney flanked by Cain and Paul, facing the two inquisitors and the Bloomberg reporter also allowed to ask questions. here is your preview for Governor Perry, his op-ed on "We must remove energy production obstacles to create jobs" posted and printed today in New Hampshire's http://www.unionleader.com/article/20111011/LOCALVOICES/710119989 More than twenty million people will be watching NCIS on CBS. I never miss it, so will watch the debate re-broadcast at 11 p.m. Bloomberg is my default news channel because they are sane and actually report news, but I surely do skew that average income down a notch!

my apologies Alec - usually it is Timothy Noah who disparages Perry and does not do his homework. I thought I was commenting in his blog.

That's easy, they can contribute to their local Chamber of Commerce and through the miracle of online transfers the money can appear as campaign contributions for their favorite candidate's from an American business which does not suffer limitations on how much money it can contribute. Easy peasy.
