Above all, treasure the film’s serene lack of exhausting violence or ingenious cruelty.

Do you recall Edith Piaf? Some of you do. Some of you don't. Edith Piaf was one of the tragic-magical chanteuses of the last mid-century. I heard her, saw her at the Copacobana after a high school prom. I remember her words, I remember her voice, I remember her affect, her drama, even her loves.
