Moderated by Christiane Amanpour, the event featured addresses by former Secretaries of State Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, and Madeleine Albright; readings of verse by actress Melissa Leo; and musical performances by Wynton Marsalis, Emmylou Harris, and the National Symphony Orchestra, among others. The Post Retreats

I was completely stunned to learn that the Washington Post pushed out Dave Weigel, who has been reporting a blog on the conservative movement and doing a fantastic job of it. The cause of the firing is that Weigel was found to have emailed nasty things about certain right-wingers.

Carter’s Problems

The networks tried to convey an understanding of what they were broadcasting. ABC called it a social occasion: "You get no sense of a political gathering here," cracked Harry Reasoner. Over at CBS, Walter Cronkite remarked: "The convention is in complete control of the Carter and Democratic National Committee forces and no fights are being permitted." The prevailing theme was persistent unrelieved harmony, the image of an absolutely unified gathering. Of the less fortunate, less harmonious past, there were only glimpses and allusions.
