Women In Combat

An Associated Press article by Matti Friedman discusses the debate in Israel over women's place on the battlefield. There are some women in battle units, even extremely dangerous battle units. And, paradoxically, one has to serve an extra year to join combat units or serve on the front line. Some women are already pilots. About 2.5 % of army women serve in combat jobs. But the figure is steadily rising.

My good friend and political adversary Naomi Chazan (a former deputy
speaker in the Knesset from the Meretz party) says, "People ask me, do you really want your daughter in a (ground combat) unit?...Well, I want my daughter to be able to decide, just like my son." That sounds very reasonable to me. Hey, Naomi, sometimes you are really reasonable.
