Why Battered Women Stay

Spousal abuse creates medical problems. There are a million other reasons why you should care about it, but it's a convenient excuse for using this space to recommend this extraordinary Hilzoy post, over at Obsidian Wings.

As much as spousal abuse is an issue, where is the movement to combat violence by disgusting pimps and predators against defenseless trafficked women and children? They're the most defenseless of all, being locked in homes, moved from city to city, raped and forced to service scum.

I would - all this charity spent on the "environment" and on lazy welfare recipients.  I refuse to help those who can (but don't) help themselves.  That is literally everyone in this great country where anyone who works can succeed.  I'm all for helping those who cannot - helpless women and children held hostage by thugs, people living in despotic regimes, people who live in poverty-stricken countries who suffer through no fault of their own (most African countries).  If you live in a developed country, over 21, able-bodied, and you are hungry or homeless, you're on your own buddy.

If I ever got enough money to become a philanthropist, that's the cause I'd follow.
