Japanese automakers claimed the top five spots in Consumer Reports' annual Automaker Report Card, with Subaru and Mazda ranked first and second, scoring 75 and 74, respectively, on a 100-point scale. Ford dropped from fifth place last year to tenth this year, with a score of 60. General Motors placed twelfth (score: 56), and Chrysler came in dead last (score: 51) among the 13 automakers surveyed.
Good thing Consumer Reports isn't rating the GOP field ...

Yeah, the Yen is at 80/$. About 33% stronger than 2 years ago when is was 120/$. Did Consumer's Report mention the pricing of these Subaru's and Mazda's? And by the way, Mazda is really struggling financially, Suburu was on the ropes a couple of years ago, and I think their Lafeyette, Ind plant is building Toyota's now. And the Consumer's Report is the best information I have seen. It correlates real well to what I have seen. Those owner's report stuff very accurately. Their magazine is lousy and the billing department is incompetent, but that ownership data is really good.

I was thinking of getting a Subaru Forrester for my wife so this is good to know. My very first car was a Subaru, as was my 4th. I had a Hyundai that blew up (my 3rd, so I will never buy another of those) I think the Republican voters are doing a bang up job evaluating the Republican candidates. Their verdict seems to be that they don't want to ride any of them.

Buy American, because you should be proud to be an idiot consumer who pays too much for inferior products...err, proud to be American.

What does this say about the success of the bailout?

"What does this say about the success of the bailout?" Not much, the bailout was mostly designed to keep these companies in existence, and in that it succeeded immensely. Encouraging the Big 2 1/2 (sorry Chrysler) to make smaller, better, and more efficient cars was a secondary goal and one that will take years to unfold before we can judge its success. There's a long way to go.

JD Powers survey, an unbiased survey unlike CR (who recommends then surveys those they preach to), contradicts CR: http://businesscenter.jdpower.com/JDPAContent/CorpComm/News/content/Releases/pdf/2012008-vds1.pdf Caddy is #3, Buick #9, Lincoln #7, Ford #8, Mazda and Subaru are below to well-below average. Chevy and Honda are right in the "average" slot next to each other. Powers and CR do correlate for Mopar products though. My experience echos what Powers says. Our 2010 Chevy Equinox has been a wonderful vehicle. I regret the day I bought a 2005 Mazda3, I will never buy a Mazda again. CR has not, in my experience, been good for anything more than appliance reviews. Their car "reviews" and surveys are laughable, especially if you've ever taken one.
