Go Home One Man, Two Guv'nors

TIMOTHY NOAH APRIL 23, 2012

One Man, Two Guv'nors

This week I will inhabit both this space and some space over at my old haunt, Slate, as I participate in a dialog with Matt Yglesias about The Great Divergence. That isn't quite the recipe for farcical mayhem that you might think, because (shhh!) Matt and I actually conducted the dialog a couple of weeks ago. A minor violation of Slate's usual protocol was committed because as the book hits the stores (theoretically tomorrow, though I've already seen it on shelves here and there) Matt is on his honeymoon. Happy honeymoon, Matt! And if you're reading this, get the hell off your computer before your bride catches you!

Even though the Slate dialog was prepared in advance, my presence here this week may be subject to slip-ups and pratfalls (especially tomorrow) as I fulfill assorted book-related duties. Meanwhile, if Slate's Dave Weigel wants to submit any guest posts for this space he should feel free. It's only fair.

MY and Noah are a great combination for a dialogue about Noah's new book. Except for his preference for tall buildings, MY is unpredictable. I'm not sure if MY is a conservative (not likely), a liberal, a libertarian, or a liberaltarian. Whatever he is, MY is definitely the purest of the bloggers, something I fear will be lost when he gains some maturity and suffers some battle scars.

Well, I guess that a reference to contemporary theater is better than nothing, given that TNR appears to have abandoned theater coverage. Sigh.

Matt Yglesis is a liberal, of course. But often enough, he takes on liberal pieties, and in The Rent Is Too Damn High, his recent ebook, he opines that liberals should take more readily to corporations and developers. I read this excellent book a few weeks back after my wife Sheena purchased it for me. And a hat tip to Tyler Cowen at Marginal Revolution for posting about it, which is where I came across this title.

MY is also the Anti-Noah in that he posts approx. 489 items per day. He's quite the happy warrior, if you're into population density and clear thinking about economic issues without (I suspect) all that much technical knowledge of the field.

Actually, I just enjoyed the trailer from ONE MAN, TWO GUV'NORS -- coming to New York soon.

I don't think anyone will notice that Mr. Noah is hawking his new book this week. it's about all he posts lately. This is not a blog, this is a Public Relations feed for Mr. Noah's ego. Yes, we are probably the small minority that cares about Income Inequality, but overt plugging like this over the last week is a turn off. I picked up a copy of TNR recently and enjoyed it much more than usual. It reminded me how much I really am not enjoying the electronic version these days.
