Marriage Actually

Over the weekend, I read the Connecticut Supreme Court’s gay marriage decision. It’s actually a rather moving document: a cogent defense of gay rights that efficiently demolishes the chief arguments against marriage equality, while offering what struck me as a reasonable defense of judicial intervention in the matter. If you have a free hour, I highly recommend reading it. A few things popped out at me as I read the ruling: READ MORE >>

What Wasn't Asked

A 90-plus minute debate about American foreign policy and not a single question about human rights. To be clear: Iraq, Afghanistan, terrorism, and grand strategy are the major international issues facing the next president and they were rightly the focus of the debate. But surely in a 90-minute conversation about the future of U.S. foreign policy, questions of human rights and genocide prevention should merit five or ten minutes. The subjects came up in passing once or twice, but it would have been nice to hear Jim Lehrer devote at least a short segment to them.  READ MORE >>

Webb of Deception

I am amazed at how many Democrats have fallen for Jim Webb. Suddenly, everywhere you look, people are touting Webb as the perfect running mate for Barack Obama. In recent days, as Webb has seemed ubiquitous (hawking his book, bantering with Jon Stewart, grinning at Obama's side), a sizeable number of my otherwise sane friends, family, and colleagues have told me that they view Webb as a perfectly acceptable choice--or, more disturbingly, a good one. Many are celebrating yesterday's decision by the California Supreme Court to legalize gay marriage in the state; others are bracing for a referendum battle; and some, cooped up in campaign offices, are trying to figure out how best to play it. So, in an effort to see the ruling from as many perspectives as possible, we've enlisted a few friends of the magazine to offer their thoughts. READ MORE >>

Last week, I debated Steve Clemons on whether President Bush should boycott the Olympics opening ceremony to show disgust over Chinese human rights abuses. I argued that Bush should boycott (or at least find some other way to express his disapproval publicly); Steve disagreed. READ MORE >>
