Gay Marriage: The Case For Cynicism
Was President Obama's endorsement of gay marriage crassly political? God, I hope so. Like a lot of people, I worry about the impact that Obama's comments will have on some independent voters, and about whether it will cause trouble when the Democrats hold their convention in North Carolina, which just voted overwhelmingly against gay marriage. But like a lot of people, I'm also hopeful that the gay-marriage endorsement will help Obama pick up some other independent voters.
Who is the real Mitt Romney? Richard Grenell, the openly gay conservative who abruptly resigned as a Romney campaign spokesman, has answered that question for us. The latest media accounts of Grenell’s departure suggest that neither Romney nor his campaign advisers had a problem with Grenell’s homosexuality or even his support for gay marriage.
Hooray For Intolerance
I know I'm supposed to be angry and disappointed that Richard Grenell, Mitt Romney's foreign policy aide, who is openly gay, felt obliged to resign from the campaign "because my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign." Grenell got "hounded by anti-gay conservatives," according to the conservative Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin. They were concerned that Grenell is a strong supporter of gay marriage.
