Obama's address in February (left) and Wednesday.
So I hate to go trivial off the bat here, but my first job was at GQ, so ... the first thing I notice tonight: that's the same damn tie he wore during January's State of the Union. A White House amulet? Who knows? (Who cares?)

Michelle Obama asked me to pass this along: "Hey, that's the tie I gave him out on the campaign trail. I asked him to wear it tonight as a reminder that none of us should ever give up hope that some day he will find his way back to the man he once was while running for the job he has since been running away from now that he is in office. "Besides, how the hell could anyone see his tie [or even him!] with the duds Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton were wearing. It was like giving a speech between two super novas!" gw

Neck of State's tie gallery (link) shows that Red Stripey is Obama's go-to tie for all power-tie occasions. It's his first choice for meeting with foreign heads of state, dealing with the economic crisis, and speaking to Congress. It is also a fantastic tie, with a fine darker red stripe between the white stripes. Depending on your taste in ties, we haven't had a presidential neck this consistently well adorned since either the first Bush or Truman.

I thought he wore a similar tie when he delivered his convention speech.
