This is the second invitation to “grab bag” an invitation to a small and intimate White House dinner. The first came from the president. Yes, direct from him, no intermediaries, no celebrity members of Congress (no, not even Nancy Pelosi, who’s written so many askings for cash that they’ve taken her off the job), no celebrities period.
Maybe the $3 come-on didn’t bring in enough pledges. So Michelle has been deputized to do the schnorrering. And she promises, “It’s just going to be a couple of us—me, Barack, supporters like you and your guests—sitting around a table, sharing stories.” This is really quite daring. A tiny dinner party! Maybe eight people or ten. What happens if one of the folk turns out to be a bore? Or, worse yet, two of them.
Friend --
At the end of a long day, Barack and I cherish the same things most American families cherish: togetherness, warm conversation, and the simple pleasure of one another’s company.
That’s what this upcoming dinner is going to be all about. It’s just going to be a couple of us -- me, Barack, supporters like you and your guests -- sitting around a table, sharing stories.
No handshaking lines, no pomp and circumstance.
We’d love for you to be a part of it. Donate $3 or whatever you can to be automatically entered today:

We hope to meet you soon,
Michelle
And below is the informative small print about the rules of the game.

Odds of winning depend on number of entries received. There was another e-mail from the finance director of Obama for America. He wasn’t inviting me to dinner. He probably wasn’t inviting you either. But he did solicit me for three bucks. Yes, $3. Nothing about the fact that the real legal limit is $5,000. So what about the big rich who can donate $50,000 and up to the campaign—and do? It’s possible. But do you really want Obama that much?
I am a bit embarrassed by harassing the Obama campaign for their slightly tawdry money pitches. After all, it seems that the Republicans don’t believe in evolution, won’t countenance abortion, think that the global atmospheric crisis is an invention of Al Gore and Dr. Sivana (this is a test of your age), believe it’s OK to be gay only if you don’t marry, serve in the military, or teach. There are other doctrinal certitudes that they profess. But I won’t get into the God question. Actually, I do believe in God. But, if they’d hear me out, probably they would say that I don’t.

Yes, it would be so much more seemly for Obama to do what the Republicans do, sell changes in law or regulation that cost the public billions of dollars in cash or injury or lost economic opportunity at a penny on the dollar.

Maybe just the least painful for all concerned is for Marty to take himself off the Obama supporter mailing list he put himself on in '08.

What an unbelievably chicken s**t post. Things could be a lot worse; unlike almost everyone else in the world, the Obama's still care about Peretz.

Actually, Cookie, the ultimate in indifference is not even bothering to take one off one's mailing list. So, Obama's like everyone else in that regard.

If you are out there Mr. Peretz, I take my hat off to you. In our local paper - the Press Democrat - I read in Joe Nocera's column that you testified for Stephen Glass in his quest to be accepted by the CA Bar. Bravo, that is an incredible act of kindness and magnanimity. When I read this, I said to myself, good for Marty Peretz.

Yes, a generous thing to do!

While this is a little self-indulgent, and clearly ignores the impression otherwise conveyed by their presence, I am glad that Peretz continues to write pieces for TNR. For so rich is the source material that one can expect a high density of wonderfully entertaining (and usually very incisive) comments, such as the first three above, following each piece. So cheers to the above commentators. I found your posts quite entertaining, and wish we still read more from you Mr Cookie.

Nari224 - For several years, I used to contribute regularly but got caught up in other things and though I still read both the print and electronic tnr, I rarely post comments. Every now and then, something moves me. One great development from my time as a tnr regular was that I met several wonderful intelligent and fascinating people, on the masthead and among the readers. I am friends now with so many and have even developed close friendships with a few, Jack R and Itzik B to name two. Recently, itzik and I discussed his view that tnr on line really light up when Marty Peretz contributes his occasional article and I have to agree. There is something about the guy that cannot be ignored. Lord knows that I have tried but then he writes something that either drives me insane or touches my heart. More the former than the later but still, he is a compelling figure and personality. I hope that tnr throws some kind of 100 year bash in DC so all readers can get together and see who's who. Take care and Feliz Ano Nuevo!

What happened to my comment? Have I been censored?

No answer, hmmm. I continue to believe this piece is an affront to good journalism. Even a blog should reflect serious research (or at least thinking) as well as editing where so plainly needed.
